Adafruit Web Learning Guide Progress Tracker turns lengthy Adafruit tutorials and learning guides into an organized, trackable learning experience. When you open any Adafruit learning guide, the tool automatically scans the page and identifies all sections, sub-sections, pages, and steps in the guide's hierarchy. It builds a nested table of contents that displays every section with its title and a completion checkbox. As you work through the guide, you can check off each section you complete, and the tool tracks your overall progress with a visual progress bar showing exactly how much of the guide you have finished. Your progress is automatically saved and persists across browsing sessions, so you can return to any guide days or weeks later and pick up exactly where you left off. Click any section title in the table of contents to instantly scroll to that section in the guide. The tool also displays estimated reading times for each section and the total guide, helping you plan your learning sessions effectively.

This extension operates exclusively on adafruit.com domain pages that contain learning guides or tutorial content—specifically pages with guide sections, educational content, or step-by-step tutorials. It works alongside the free BotGentz companion extension, which provides the necessary DOM access and page interaction capabilities. The progress tracker runs entirely within your local browser instance and does not communicate with any external servers or APIs. All section detection, progress tracking, and completion data is stored locally on your machine using GM_setValue, ensuring your learning progress remains private and under your control. It supports all modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox when paired with the BotGentz bridge.

HOW TO USE

After installing both BotGentz and this progress tracker, simply navigate to any Adafruit learning guide page. Within 1-2 seconds, a panel appears in the bottom-right corner displaying your current progress with a progress bar and section count. The "Table of Contents" section shows all guide sections in a hierarchical list. As you read through the guide, check the box next to each section you complete—the progress bar updates immediately and your progress is automatically saved. Click any section title to smoothly scroll directly to that part of the guide, making it easy to jump between sections or review previous material. Use "Reset Progress" to clear all completion data for the current guide and start over, or "Mark All Complete" to quickly finish an entire guide you have already read. The estimated reading time helps you gauge how long each section will take. All progress data is stored per guide URL, so you can track multiple guides simultaneously.

HIERARCHICAL SECTION DETECTION

The progress tracker uses a heading-based parsing system that analyzes the document structure to identify sections and their hierarchical relationships. It locates all heading elements (H1 through H5) within the guide content area and builds a nested tree structure based on heading levels. Each heading becomes a section, with child sections nested under parent sections based on heading level hierarchy. This approach is robust across different Adafruit guide layouts because it relies on semantic HTML heading tags rather than specific class names or page structure. The tool also calculates estimated reading time for each section by counting the words in the content following each heading and dividing by an average reading speed of 200 words per minute. This provides a practical estimate without requiring external APIs or complex natural language processing. Progress is calculated as the percentage of total sections that have been marked complete, with the progress bar and counter updating in real time.

THE PANEL

The progress tracker panel is a compact, functional overlay that integrates into the Adafruit guide page. It can be dragged by clicking and holding the title bar, positioning the panel anywhere on the screen for optimal visibility while you read and learn. The panel includes a built-in snap feature that automatically aligns to the nearest screen edge when released within 48 pixels, keeping your workspace organized. Click the collapse arrow in the top-right corner to minimize the panel to a small icon bubble showing a gear emoji, preserving screen space while keeping the tool accessible. The panel is not resizable in this version, maintaining a consistent compact size that works on all screen resolutions. Press the Escape key to instantly hide the panel; press Escape again to restore it. All position, collapse state, and progress data are saved locally using GM_setValue and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to function—the progress tracker does not work standalone. Adafruit occasionally updates its learning guide layouts and section structures, which may temporarily affect section detection accuracy. The tool extracts sections based on heading elements and may not detect sections that are dynamically loaded or use non-standard heading markup. Progress data is stored per URL path, so changes to guide URLs may reset your progress for that guide. The tool does not store or transmit any data; all progress information is saved entirely within your browser. Completion checkboxes are provided for personal tracking purposes only and do not affect your Adafruit account or any official certification.
