WHAT IT DOES

AllTrails Web Trail Condition Report Overlay automatically scans AllTrails trail pages and extracts trail condition data from user reviews, weather information, trail closure notices, and user-reported issues. The tool aggregates and summarizes recent reviews into a comprehensive condition report displayed in a floating panel. A color-coded status indicator shows the overall trail condition as Clear, Minor Issues, Significant Issues, or Closed. The panel displays condition alerts highlighting the most frequently reported issues such as mud, snow, ice, fallen trees, flooding, and overgrown sections. Recent reviews are summarized with their condition status, reviewer names, and a preview of key comments. A status breakdown shows how many reviews reported each condition level, helping you understand the distribution of user experiences. The panel groups reviews by time period to show condition trends, giving you insight into whether trail conditions are improving or worsening over time.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension operates exclusively on alltrails.com domain pages that contain trail content—specifically pages with "/trail/" in the URL path or pages that display trail details and user reviews. It works alongside the free BotGentz companion extension, which provides the necessary DOM access and page interaction capabilities. The condition report overlay runs entirely within your local browser instance and does not communicate with any external servers or APIs. All review extraction, condition analysis, and status aggregation occurs on your machine, ensuring your browsing activity remains private. It supports all modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox when paired with the BotGentz bridge.

HOW TO USE

After installing both BotGentz and this condition report overlay, simply navigate to any AllTrails trail page. Within 1-2 seconds, a panel appears in the bottom-right corner displaying the overall trail condition status with a large emoji indicator and status label. The "Condition Alerts" section shows the most frequently reported issues across recent reviews, with counts indicating how many reviews mentioned each condition. The "Recent Reviews" section displays individual review excerpts with their reported status, reviewer name, and condition tags for quick scanning. The "Status Breakdown" section shows the distribution of Clear, Minor Issues, Significant Issues, and Closed reports across all extracted reviews. The panel also includes a toggle to automatically show the condition panel whenever you visit a trail page. All settings are saved and persist across browsing sessions.

CONDITION EXTRACTION AND KEYWORD ANALYSIS

The condition report overlay uses a comprehensive keyword detection system to identify and categorize trail conditions from user review text. The tool maintains a curated dictionary of condition keywords organized by category, including terms for snow ("snow," "snowy," "snowpack"), ice ("ice," "icy," "frozen"), mud ("mud," "muddy," "wet," "soggy"), fallen trees ("fallen tree," "downed tree," "blocked"), flooding ("flood," "flooded," "water over trail"), overgrowth ("overgrown," "brush," "thick"), and rockiness ("rocky," "rocks," "scramble"). Each review is scanned for these keywords, and detected conditions are tallied across all reviews to identify the most commonly reported issues. The overall trail status is determined through a weighted decision algorithm that prioritizes significant issues: if any review reports fallen trees or flooding, the status is set to "Significant Issues"; if snow, ice, or mud are prevalent but no significant issues exist, the status is set to "Minor Issues"; if clear conditions dominate and no issues are reported, the status is "Clear." Reviewers and dates are extracted from page elements when available, providing context for the recency of each report.

THE PANEL

The condition report panel is a compact, functional overlay that integrates into the AllTrails page. It can be dragged by clicking and holding the title bar, positioning the panel anywhere on the screen for optimal visibility while you browse trail information. The panel includes a built-in snap feature that automatically aligns to the nearest screen edge when released within 48 pixels, keeping your workspace organized. Click the collapse arrow in the top-right corner to minimize the panel to a small icon bubble showing a gear emoji, preserving screen space while keeping the tool accessible. The panel is not resizable in this version, maintaining a consistent compact size that works on all screen resolutions. Press the Escape key to instantly hide the panel; press Escape again to restore it. All position, collapse state, and auto-show preferences are saved locally using GM_setValue and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to function—the condition report overlay does not work standalone. AllTrails occasionally updates its page layouts and review presentation formats, which may temporarily affect review extraction accuracy. The tool extracts condition data from user reviews and does not have access to official trail condition reports or weather data. Condition keywords are based on common terms found in user reviews and may not capture every possible issue. The tool does not store or transmit any data; all review extraction, condition analysis, and settings are processed and saved entirely within your browser. Trail conditions can change rapidly due to weather and other factors—always check official sources and exercise caution when hiking.
