WHAT IT DOES

FamilySearch Web Record Hint Organizer reads record hints from FamilySearch person pages and presents them in an organized, sortable panel. It automatically detects and categorizes hints by record type—census, birth, marriage, death, military, immigration, residence, family, and others. Each hint displays its title, record type, and confidence score, allowing you to prioritize the most promising matches. Hints are sorted by confidence score by default, so the most reliable records appear first. The extension also tracks which hints you have reviewed, with a simple "Mark Reviewed" button for each hint. Reviewed hints are visually dimmed and can be hidden from the panel, helping you focus on new or unprocessed records. A one-click navigation feature opens any hint in a new tab, so you can quickly examine record details without losing your place.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on all FamilySearch pages at familysearch.org and its subdomains, specifically on person detail pages where record hints are displayed. It runs on the person page, the source page, and any page where hint cards or record matches are shown. The extension operates entirely within your browser and does not access FamilySearch's servers directly—it reads only what is visible on the page you are viewing. It works alongside the free BotGentz extension, which provides the necessary scripting environment.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension, then navigate to familysearch.org and view a person's detail page with record hints. The extension automatically detects all hints and displays them in a panel. Click the extension's icon in your browser toolbar to open the panel. Use the dropdown menu to sort hints by Confidence Score, Hint Type, or Date. Each hint shows its title, type icon, and confidence percentage. Click any hint row to open the record details in a new tab. When you finish reviewing a hint, click the "Mark Reviewed" button next to it to track your progress. The "Show reviewed hints" toggle controls whether reviewed hints appear in the panel. The "Refresh Hints" button manually updates the panel with the latest hint data. The "Clear Reviewed Status" button resets all reviewed statuses.

KEYWORD-BASED TYPE CLASSIFICATION WITH PRIORITY ORDERING

Unlike simple selector-based approaches that rely on FamilySearch's CSS classes, this extension uses a sophisticated keyword-based classification engine that identifies record types by analyzing both element text content and HTML attributes. The classification system maintains a priority-ordered dictionary of keywords for each record type—census, birth, marriage, death, military, immigration, residence, and family. It scans multiple sources: the hint title, type label, source description, and surrounding element text. Each keyword is weighted by position and context, with title matches given higher priority than general text matches. When multiple type keywords are detected, the engine resolves conflicts by applying a secondary scoring system that considers keyword specificity and frequency. This multi-source approach makes the extension resilient to FamilySearch's dynamic class naming and structural changes, ensuring accurate type classification across different pages and updates.

THE PANEL

The panel supports drag-to-move anywhere on the page. It remembers its position per site, so it stays where you placed it on familysearch.org. Click the panel header to collapse it down to just the minimized bubble, or click the expand handle to show the full panel. The panel can be resized by dragging the bottom-right corner. Press the Escape key to close the expanded panel and return to the minimized state. All panel settings, including position, size, collapsed state, sort preference, and reviewed hints visibility, are saved per site and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to be installed and active, as it provides the underlying DOM injection and script execution environment. FamilySearch's website changes periodically, and hint element structures, class names, and page layouts may be updated. When that happens, the extension may stop detecting hints until an update is released. The extension stores your sort preference, reviewed hints visibility setting, and all reviewed hint IDs locally in your browser's storage using GM_setValue. Reviewed hints are stored as a simple key-value object where keys are hint IDs. No data is ever sent to any server, and no personal information is collected. The extension does not read or store your FamilySearch login credentials, email, or any identifying information. It only reads publicly visible hint data from the page. You can clear all stored settings and reviewed status at any time using the "Clear Reviewed Status" button or by clearing your browser data for familysearch.org.
