Search Engine Result Freshness Badge

WHAT IT DOES

Search Engine Result Freshness Badge scans the current page for search engine results and displays a floating badge next to each result showing its estimated freshness based on date information extracted from result snippets, meta tags, and URL structures. Each badge is color-coded: green for recent content (within 30 days), yellow for moderate age (31-180 days), and red for outdated content (over 365 days). The panel shows freshness distribution across all results, average age, oldest and newest results, and a recency score. Filter results by freshness category, and copy the full freshness report for documentation.

WHERE IT RUNS

Works on any search engine result page, including Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Startpage, and other search engines. The script intelligently detects result containers using search engine-specific selectors and can also fall back to general link detection on any page with search-like results. It works best on major search engines but can also provide freshness information on any page with dated links.

HOW TO USE

The panel displays an overview of all detected search results with freshness distribution statistics. Click "Scan Page" to analyze the current page and inject badges. Each search result displays a small badge showing its freshness category with an icon and age indicator (e.g., "🟢 Recent (3 days ago)"). The panel shows total results, fresh and outdated counts, average age, oldest and newest results, and a full list of results with their ages. Copy the freshness report as formatted text for sharing or analysis. Customize freshness thresholds (recent/moderate/outdated) and choose which categories to show.

MECHANISM — MULTI-SOURCE DATE EXTRACTION WITH PATTERN MATCHING

The script uses a layered approach to extract date information from search results. It first attempts to find date information in the result element using common selectors (.date, .published-date, .timestamp). If that fails, it checks meta tags for publication data. Finally, it parses the URL for date patterns like /2024/01/15/. The extracted date is then compared to the current date to calculate age in days. The freshness classification uses configurable thresholds (default: 30 days for recent, 180 days for moderate, 365+ for outdated). All extraction and classification runs entirely client-side with no external API calls.

THE PANEL

The floating panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per domain. Click the minimize button to collapse it to a small bubble, or press Escape to hide it. The panel automatically adjusts to different screen sizes and can be resized to show more content. All settings, including freshness thresholds and visibility toggles, are saved per domain. The panel integrates smoothly with any page layout using the BGPanel framework, maintaining clean separation from page content.

PLEASE NOTE

This script requires the free BotGentz extension to run. It does not send any data to external servers; all extracted freshness data and settings remain entirely local to your browser using GM_setValue. The script never reads password fields, hidden inputs, or file inputs. It stores only result titles, URLs, and extracted dates from publicly visible page content. Date extraction accuracy depends on the page structure; if dates are not detected, the result will show "Unknown" freshness. Customize thresholds to match your needs for time-sensitive searches. Data persists across browser sessions and is isolated per browser profile.
