WHAT IT DOES

SmartThings Bulk Device Renamer lets you rename multiple devices in a single operation. Instead of opening each device individually, navigating to the name field, editing the text, and saving — repeating this for every single device — this tool provides a unified checklist of all devices on the current page. You can filter devices by type or status to quickly find the ones you want to rename. Select any number of devices using checkboxes, choose your rename pattern (Add prefix, Add suffix, or Replace), enter the pattern text, and click Rename. The tool then automatically processes each selected device — opening the edit modal, applying the name pattern, and saving the changes. This turns what could be dozens of manual operations into a single batch action, making smart home device organization and management significantly faster and more consistent.

WHERE IT RUNS

This script runs exclusively on the SmartThings web application in your browser. It activates on the device list page, things view, and dashboard within the SmartThings interface. It requires the BotGentz extension to inject and execute the script. The tool does not work on the SmartThings mobile app, the API, or any third-party SmartThings clients — only the web-based SmartThings interface accessed through a Chromium-based or Firefox browser. It specifically targets pages under *.smartthings.com, including the SmartThings devices and dashboard views.

HOW TO USE

After installing the script via BotGentz, navigate to your SmartThings dashboard and open the Devices or Things page. The tool automatically detects the device list and displays a floating panel on the right side. The panel shows all devices on the current page, with checkboxes next to each device entry. Each device displays its name, type, and status with a color indicator. Use the search box to filter by name or type, or use the device type filter dropdown to show only specific types of devices. Check the boxes for every device you want to rename. Below the device list, select your rename pattern — "Add prefix" to add text before the existing name, "Add suffix" to add text after the existing name, or "Replace" to replace part of the name (use the format "old|new"). Enter the pattern text in the input field. Click "Rename Devices" and confirm the action. The tool will process each selected device one by one — opening the edit modal, applying the name pattern, and saving. A status message appears when the operation completes, showing how many devices were successfully renamed.

THE ACTUAL MECHANISM — WHY IT WORKS

SmartThings' web interface is built with React and uses a component-based rendering system for its device management. The device list is rendered as table rows or cards, each containing device metadata and action buttons. This tool scans the DOM for device items using multiple selector patterns that SmartThings consistently uses across versions. For each device, it extracts the name, type, and status from the visible text content and data attributes. Each device is assigned a unique identifier from data attributes or checkbox values. When renaming, the tool locates the edit button within each device item and triggers a click event that opens SmartThings' edit modal. The tool then applies the selected pattern — adding a prefix or suffix, or performing a text replacement using JavaScript's replace method. The tool sets the new name value using React-friendly event dispatching — setting the value via the native setter and dispatching both "input" and "change" events to ensure React registers the update. The tool then clicks the modal's save/update button, waits for the modal to close, and proceeds to the next device. This approach works without making direct API calls, which would require authentication credentials and knowledge of SmartThings' internal API structure. By using the existing UI, the tool works within SmartThings' own permission and validation system, and continues to function even if the underlying API changes.

THE PANEL

The floating panel is fully draggable — click and drag the header to reposition it anywhere on the page. The panel's position is saved per site in localStorage, so it reappears exactly where you left it when you return to the devices page. Double-click the header to snap the panel to the nearest edge (left or right). A collapse button minimizes the panel to a small tab showing a device emoji badge, keeping it out of the way while still accessible. The device list inside the panel is scrollable and resizes vertically based on the number of devices. Pressing Escape while the panel is focused closes it completely; reopening is done via a small button injected near the page toolbar. All panel interactions are non-blocking — SmartThings' main UI remains fully responsive while the panel is open, and the panel updates automatically when you navigate between pages.

This script requires the BotGentz extension (free) to run user scripts on SmartThings. SmartThings frequently updates its web interface and modal structures; if the tool stops working, check for an updated version within BotGentz's script repository. This tool does not store, transmit, or log any device data, names, or status information — all operations occur locally in your browser with no external network requests except those made by SmartThings itself. Rename operations are applied through SmartThings' own UI event system, so all changes respect your account permissions and device settings. The tool does not bypass SmartThings' security or permission system; it simply automates the clicks you would otherwise perform manually. For accounts with a large number of devices, the tool may take several minutes to complete the operation, as each device is processed sequentially with delays to avoid overwhelming the UI. A progress indicator shows which device is currently being processed. Always double-check your selections and pattern before applying changes, as bulk renames can affect device identification in automations and scenes. The tool only affects devices visible on the current page; to rename all devices, use SmartThings' built-in pagination controls or adjust your filters to show all relevant devices. The replace pattern uses the format "old|new" where "old" is the text to find and "new" is the replacement text (case-insensitive).
