About this app

WHAT IT DOES

TaxAct Web Deduction Finder Overlay reads tax deduction categories and status from your TaxAct account and displays a floating deduction finder overlay showing potential deductions and their current status. The badge shows your progress as completed/total deductions, a progress bar, and a status indicator—All Deductions Found (green) when complete, Some Deductions Found (yellow) when partial, or Check for Deductions (red) when no deductions have been found. A detail line shows missing deduction names and the number of deductions found. The extension tracks deduction status per tax year, storing each status change with a timestamp. When deductions are missing, a desktop notification is triggered. The panel displays your current progress, status, and missing deduction count.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on all TaxAct pages at taxact.com and its subdomains, specifically on account pages where deduction categories and tax preparation status are displayed. It runs on the main account page, the deduction finder page, the tax preparation dashboard, and any page displaying deduction information. The extension operates entirely within your browser and does not access TaxAct's servers directly—it reads only what is visible on the page you are viewing. It works alongside the free BotGentz extension, which provides the necessary scripting environment.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension, then navigate to taxact.com and log in to your account. The extension automatically creates a floating deduction finder overlay on the page. Click the extension's icon in your browser toolbar to open the settings panel. Use the "Show Overlay" / "Hide Overlay" button to toggle the badge visibility. The badge shows your deduction progress, status, and missing deductions. Use the "Refresh" button to manually update the badge with the latest deduction status. The "Show completed deductions" toggle controls whether completed deductions appear in the details. The "Deduction reminders" toggle controls desktop notifications when deductions are missing. Adjust the overlay transparency using the opacity dropdown (70%, 82%, 92%, or 100%). Drag the badge by clicking and holding anywhere inside it. Resize it by dragging the bottom-right corner. Close the badge with the × button.

DEDUCTION CATEGORY EXTRACTION WITH STATUS DETECTION AND PER-YEAR TRACKING

Unlike simple progress counters, this extension uses a multi-selector extraction engine to find deduction items and their status from TaxAct's varying page structures. It searches for deduction items using multiple selector patterns (.deduction-item, .deduction-card, .category-item) and falls back to text parsing and category detection using a built-in list of common deduction categories (Charitable Donations, Mortgage Interest, Property Taxes, Medical Expenses, etc.). Completion status is detected using status elements, checkmark indicators, and keyword matching (completed, done, finished). Each deduction's status is tracked individually, and the overall progress is calculated as the ratio of completed deductions to total deductions. Per-tax-year deduction history is stored as a key-value object where keys are tax year strings and values are arrays of status records with timestamps, limited to 20 entries per year. Missing deduction notifications trigger when no deductions have been found, with a once-per-day cooldown.

THE PANEL

The panel supports drag-to-move anywhere on the page. It remembers its position per site, so it stays where you placed it on taxact.com. Click the panel header to collapse it down to just the minimized bubble, or click the expand handle to show the full panel. The panel can be resized by dragging the bottom-right corner. Press the Escape key to close the expanded panel and return to the minimized state. All panel settings, including position, size, collapsed state, opacity, completed deductions visibility, notification preference, and per-year deduction history, are saved per site and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to be installed and active, as it provides the underlying DOM injection and script execution environment. TaxAct's website changes periodically, and deduction element structures, class names, and page layouts may be updated. When that happens, the extension may stop detecting deduction data until an update is released. The extension stores your overlay position, size, opacity, visibility, completed deductions preference, notification preference, and per-year deduction history locally in your browser's storage using GM_setValue. Deduction history is stored as a key-value object where keys are tax year strings and values are arrays of status records. The deduction status displayed is read from the page—the extension does not access TaxAct's internal tax data. Always verify with TaxAct directly for the most accurate deduction information. No data is ever sent to any server, and no personal information is collected. You can clear all stored settings at any time by clearing your browser data for taxact.com.
