About this app
WHAT IT DOES
Universal Jargon Word Highlighter helps you identify jargon, buzzwords, and overly complex terminology in any webpage's text content, making it easier to spot language that might confuse readers. The script analyzes visible text and detects jargon using a comprehensive dictionary of technical, business, academic, and common buzzwords, then highlights jargon terms with a distinct background color and dashed underline. Each jargon term is categorized (technical, business, academic, or common) for context. When you hover over a highlighted term, a tooltip shows a simpler alternative. A sidebar lists all jargon instances with their categories and suggested simpler alternatives. You can click any item in the sidebar to scroll to and highlight the corresponding location on the page. Statistics show the number of jargon instances and jargon density percentage, helping you assess the clarity of the text.
WHERE IT RUNS
This script runs on every website (matching all URLs), analyzing page content across the entire web. It works on articles, blog posts, documentation, emails, and any page with visible text content. The script automatically adapts to each page and handles both static and dynamically loaded content.
HOW TO USE
After installing through the BotGentz extension, simply browse to any webpage. The script automatically analyzes the page and highlights jargon instances. Use the configuration panel to customize your experience: choose highlight colors (purple, pink, orange, or teal), toggle page highlights on or off, show or hide the sidebar list, show or hide statistics, show or hide simpler alternatives, and enable or disable auto-analysis. The panel displays real-time statistics including jargon count, total words, and jargon density percentage. Use the "Analyze Page" button to manually reanalyze, or "Clear Highlights" to remove all highlighting.
COMPREHENSIVE JARGON DETECTION WITH CATEGORIZED DICTIONARY AND ALTERNATIVES
This script implements a jargon detection engine using a multi-category dictionary with over 200 jargon terms across technical, business, academic, and common categories. The detection engine uses case-insensitive word matching with whole-word boundary detection to avoid false positives (e.g., "form" in "transform" vs "form" as jargon). The dictionary includes both single-word jargon (e.g., "synergy", "agile", "paradigm") and multi-word phrases (e.g., "low-hanging fruit", "deep dive", "bleeding edge"). Each jargon term is paired with a simpler alternative suggestion (e.g., "synergy" → "combined effect, cooperation"). The alternative suggestion engine provides plain-language alternatives that help improve writing clarity. The jargon density calculation provides a percentage measure of jargon usage, helping quantify the complexity of the text.
THE PANEL
The configuration panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per-site using GM_setValue. It snaps to screen edges when dragged near them, collapses to a compact bubble when minimized, and supports Escape key for quick collapse. All settings—including highlight color, display preferences, statistics visibility, alternative display, and auto-analysis—are persisted across sessions.
PLEASE NOTE
This script requires the free BotGentz extension to run. The script runs on all websites and reads page content to detect jargon. It does not capture, store, or transmit any personal information. All analysis occurs locally in your browser. The jargon detection is based on a built-in dictionary and may not catch all jargon terms, especially industry-specific or emerging terms. Suggestions for simpler alternatives are provided as guidance and may not always be the best fit for every context. This tool is provided for informational and educational purposes only.
