About this app

WHAT IT DOES

Universal Passive Voice Highlighter helps you identify passive voice constructions in any webpage's text content, making it easier to improve writing clarity and readability. The script analyzes visible text and detects passive voice patterns using linguistic rules (be + past participle), then highlights passive phrases with a distinct background color and wavy underline. Passive voice counts and percentages are displayed, showing how much of the text uses passive constructions. When you hover over a highlighted phrase, a tooltip shows the passive construction. A sidebar lists all passive voice instances with suggestions for converting them to active voice. You can click any item in the sidebar to scroll to and highlight the corresponding sentence on the page. The script tracks passive voice density across the page and provides configurable sensitivity levels (strict, moderate, loose) to control detection aggressiveness.

WHERE IT RUNS

This script runs on every website (matching all URLs), analyzing page content across the entire web. It works on articles, blog posts, documentation, emails, and any page with visible text content. The script automatically adapts to each page and handles both static and dynamically loaded content.

HOW TO USE

After installing through the BotGentz extension, simply browse to any webpage. The script automatically analyzes the page and highlights passive voice instances. Use the configuration panel to customize your experience: choose highlight colors (yellow, red, blue, or purple), adjust sensitivity (strict, moderate, or loose), toggle page highlights on or off, show or hide the sidebar list, show or hide statistics, show or hide active voice suggestions, and enable or disable auto-analysis. The panel displays real-time statistics including passive voice count, total sentences, and passive percentage. Use the "Analyze Page" button to manually reanalyze, or "Clear Highlights" to remove all highlighting.

LINGUISTIC PASSIVE VOICE DETECTION WITH CONTEXTUAL SENSITIVITY

This script implements a passive voice detection engine using linguistic pattern matching with configurable sensitivity. The detection algorithm scans sentences for passive helper verbs (am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being) followed by past participles. The past participle detection uses a dictionary of common past participles, combined with pattern recognition for -ed endings and irregular forms. The strict sensitivity mode only detects clear passive constructions with standard helper verbs followed by recognized past participles. The moderate mode adds detection for "be" + "not" + past participle patterns. The loose mode extends detection to include more lenient past participle identification, catching edge cases and less common constructions. The suggestion engine generates active voice alternatives by identifying the subject and converting the passive construction to an active form, often using the agent from a "by" phrase when available.

THE PANEL

The configuration panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per-site using GM_setValue. It snaps to screen edges when dragged near them, collapses to a compact bubble when minimized, and supports Escape key for quick collapse. All settings—including highlight color, sensitivity, display preferences, statistics visibility, suggestion display, and auto-analysis—are persisted across sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This script requires the free BotGentz extension to run. The script runs on all websites and reads page content to detect passive voice. It does not capture, store, or transmit any personal information. All analysis occurs locally in your browser. The passive voice detection is based on linguistic rules and may not be 100% accurate for all sentences, especially complex or literary constructions. Suggestions for active voice conversion are generated automatically and should be used as a guide, not as a definitive rewrite. This tool is provided for informational and educational purposes only.
