About this app

WHAT IT DOES

Base Chain Explorer is a read-only blockchain analytics tool built specifically for the Base L2 ecosystem. It provides comprehensive visibility into Base on-chain activity including native ETH transactions, ERC-20 token transfers, ERC-721 NFT transfers, contract interactions, wallet balances, and detailed transaction receipts. The tool retrieves full L2 transaction details with gas costs calculated using effectiveGasPrice (not the pre-EIP-1559 gasPrice cap), and automatically detects and displays token transfers from transaction logs. It shows L2-specific data such as gas usage and effective pricing, giving users a complete picture of their Base network activity.

HOW TO USE

Select the desired Base network (Base Mainnet or Base Goerli Testnet) from the dropdown menu. Enter a transaction hash to view complete L2 transaction details including status, gas usage, effective gas price, total cost, and any token transfers embedded in the logs. Enter a wallet address to view its ETH balance and a summary of recent ERC-20 and ERC-721 transfers organized by token contract. Enter a token contract address to view its transfer history—the tool will automatically detect it as an address lookup and show transfers involving that contract. Each result includes direct links to Basescan for deeper investigation.

TECHNICAL MECHANISM

The tool uses ethers.js v5.7.2 to connect to Base via either the connected wallet's provider or a public RPC endpoint (mainnet.base.org for mainnet, goerli.base.org for testnet). For transaction lookups, it fetches the transaction, receipt, and block data, then parses logs to extract token transfers using the standard ERC-20/ERC-721 Transfer event signature (0xddf252ad...). For address lookups, it retrieves the native ETH balance and then uses chunked log scanning with automatic backoff to fetch token transfer events involving the address. The log scanner starts with 2000-block chunks and halves the chunk size on RPC rejection, ensuring public RPC limits are respected. Gas costs are calculated using receipt.effectiveGasPrice, which accurately reflects actual spend post-London upgrade, and the tool respects Base's L2 fee structure.

WHAT IT CANNOT SEE

This tool cannot track cross-chain Base transfers beyond the L2—once funds bridge to Ethereum mainnet or other chains, they are outside its scope. It cannot verify off-chain transaction status or detect transactions that have not yet been broadcast to the network. It is limited to Base Chain data only and cannot detect tokens that do not follow the standard ERC-20/ERC-721 event interfaces (e.g., tokens using non-standard transfer signatures, or proxy patterns with different event emitters). It also cannot see Sequencer-internal state or pending sequencer batches that have not been included in a block.

PLEASE NOTE

This tool is EVM only and specifically designed for Base (mainnet and Goerli testnet). No other chains are supported. All data is read-only—no transactions are signed or sent.
