Library Database Access While Traveling is a dedicated region-switching tool that helps you understand which library databases, digital archives, catalog systems, and research repositories become accessible when BotSurf is set to a specific country or region while you are traveling. It is not a VPN or proxy; it works alongside BotSurf to change the apparent location that library systems use to determine your regional access. By doing so, it surfaces the local catalog access, digital collection availability, authentication requirements, interlibrary loan options, and repository restrictions that are normally shown to researchers and patrons browsing from that region. This makes it easier for traveling scholars to understand regional library access differences and navigate the complex landscape of global library systems and archival geo-restrictions.

WHAT THE REGION CHANGES — SPECIFIC

When the region is set to a specific country, this app reflects the following practical changes:

• Library system availability becomes visible — WorldCat, Library of Congress, Digital Public Library of America, HathiTrust, Internet Archive, British Library, National Archives UK, Europeana, national libraries, European library networks, and university library portals have different regional footprints.

• Digital collection access is shown — extensive US archives, manuscripts, and government documents in the US; UK national archives, historical manuscripts, and British Library collections in the UK; European archives, multilingual collections, and EU documents in the EU.

• Authentication requirements are displayed — institution/SSO or library card in the US, UK library card or institutional login in the UK, and institutional or national library card in the EU.

• Interlibrary loan options are noted — interlibrary loan is available in the US and UK, and across the EU.

• Restrictions are identified — some international collections are limited in the US, US-specific archives are limited in the UK, and non-EU collections may be limited in the EU.

• Catalog gaps are noted — European/Asian archives are often limited in the US, US-specific collections are limited in the UK, and non-European content varies in the EU.

This is not a universal unlock — it changes what is shown, not what is available. The visible library options and regional insights update based on the region value passed to the platform.

HOW TO USE

Open the app over any library catalog, digital archive, or research repository where you want to see regional access availability while traveling. It works in two modes:

• Layered over a live page — activate the panel while browsing the library system; the page stays in the background and you can consult the region status, database availability, and access policies without losing your place.

• Full frame — when there is no underlying page, the app stands alone as a dashboard showing the current region and the expected library database information.

Once the app is open, check the region chip in the header to confirm you are browsing as a specific country. If not, use the "switch" button or the "Prompt region change" button in the main card to ask BotSurf to switch. When a region change is initiated, your browser will ask for permission to reload; accept the reload to apply the new region to the page underneath. If you choose not to reload, the app will still show the updated region status, but the underlying library page will continue to use the previous region until it is refreshed manually.

Use the editable reference table to keep notes of library access data you have observed — it is a static memory aid, not a live feed. The consistency check helps you see if your own browser signals (timezone, language) agree with the claimed region, which is important because some library systems cross-check these signals.

WHAT IT CANNOT DO

This app does not route traffic or mask your IP address — BotSurf handles that separately. It cannot bypass library-imposed regional access restrictions, which are enforced by libraries and institutions based on your detected location, institutional affiliation, and licensing agreements. It cannot guarantee access to any specific database or archival material, as availability depends on institutional subscriptions, digitization agreements, and regional rights. It cannot override the terms of service of library systems such as WorldCat, Library of Congress, British Library, Europeana, national archives, university library portals, or any other provider. It cannot authenticate with a library or institution — you must have a valid library card or institutional login to access restricted materials. It cannot affect account entitlements, borrowing privileges, or saved materials that are tied to your institutional affiliation or registered location rather than your browsing region. It is a front-end region indicator and informational tool, not a licence circumvention or authentication solution.

PLEASE NOTE

Many library systems and digital archives actively detect and block VPN or region-switching traffic. While this app is designed to work with BotSurf, some services may still serve a default global catalog or require institutional authentication to access regional collections. Terms of service for these platforms may prohibit using region-switching tools to access region-restricted materials; users should review applicable terms and use this tool responsibly. This app does not store personal or payment data — all region state is held in memory only for the current page session. Library database data in the reference table is static and not guaranteed to be current; always verify with the library or institution.
