WHAT IT DOES

SkySafari Web Event Reminder automatically scans SkySafari event pages and astronomical calendars to extract comprehensive celestial event data including event names, event types (Meteor Shower, Eclipse, Conjunction, Occultation, Equinox, Solstice, Comet, Asteroid, and other events), dates, times, visibility regions, and magnitude or importance ratings. The tool displays a floating overlay panel showing all upcoming astronomical events in a sortable, filterable list. You can set reminders for specific events by clicking the bell icon next to each event, and your reminder preferences are stored across sessions. Countdown timers show how long until the next event, and events visible from your location are highlighted with a "Visible from your location" badge. Category filters let you focus on specific event types, and your preferred event categories are saved automatically. This helps you never miss a celestial event again.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension operates exclusively on skysafari.com and skysafariastro.com domain pages that contain event content—specifically pages with "/events", "/calendar", or "/upcoming" in the URL path, or pages that display astronomical event listings and calendars. It works alongside the free BotGentz companion extension, which provides the necessary DOM access and page interaction capabilities. The event reminder runs entirely within your local browser instance and does not communicate with any external servers or APIs. All event data extraction, reminder tracking, and preference storage occurs on your machine, ensuring your event selections and reminder settings remain private. It supports all modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox when paired with the BotGentz bridge.

HOW TO USE

After installing both BotGentz and this event reminder, navigate to any SkySafari event or calendar page. Within 1-2 seconds, a panel appears in the bottom-right corner displaying a summary of events found. The "Events" section lists each astronomical event with its name, type emoji, date, time, visibility region, and magnitude when available. Click the bell icon (🔕) next to any event to set a reminder—the icon turns blue (🔔) and your reminder is saved. Click it again to remove the reminder. A countdown timer shows the event date for reference. Events visible from your location are marked with a green "Visible from your location" badge. The "Filters" section lets you filter events by type—click any category tag to show or hide that event type, or click "All" to show everything. Your filter preferences are saved automatically across sessions. A summary shows total events and a breakdown by type.

ASTRONOMICAL EVENT EXTRACTION AND CATEGORIZATION

The event reminder uses a multi-strategy extraction system to locate and parse celestial event data from SkySafari pages. It first attempts to find structured event elements using selectors based on the site's typical class naming patterns, including "event-item," "event-card," and "calendar-event." When these selectors fail due to site updates, the tool falls back to scanning page content for event-like text patterns, looking for elements that contain astronomical keywords and date patterns. Each event is categorized using a comprehensive keyword mapping system: "meteor," "shower," "persied," "leonid," or "geminid" maps to Meteor Shower; "eclipse," "lunar," or "solar" to Eclipse; "conjunction" or "alignment" to Conjunction; "occultation" or "cover" to Occultation; "equinox" to Equinox; "solstice" to Solstice; "comet" or "cometary" to Comet; "asteroid" or "minor planet" to Asteroid. Date and time are extracted through pattern matching for common date formats, visibility region through pattern matching for "visible:" or "seen from:" labels, and magnitude through pattern matching for "magnitude:" or "rating:" labels. Reminders are stored as an array of event names in GM_setValue, allowing the tool to track which events you have set reminders for.

THE PANEL

The event reminder panel is a compact, functional overlay that integrates into the SkySafari event page. It can be dragged by clicking and holding the title bar, positioning the panel anywhere on the screen for optimal visibility while you browse events. The panel includes a built-in snap feature that automatically aligns to the nearest screen edge when released within 48 pixels, keeping your workspace organized. Click the collapse arrow in the top-right corner to minimize the panel to a small icon bubble showing a gear emoji, preserving screen space while keeping the tool accessible. The panel is not resizable in this version, maintaining a consistent compact size that works on all screen resolutions. Press the Escape key to instantly hide the panel; press Escape again to restore it. All position, collapse state, event reminders, and category filter preferences are saved locally using GM_setValue and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to function—the event reminder does not work standalone. SkySafari occasionally updates its page layouts and event presentation formats, which may temporarily affect data extraction accuracy. The tool extracts event data from the visible page content; if event data is loaded dynamically after page load, you may need to wait a moment or refresh the page for the panel to populate. Reminders are stored locally in your browser and are not synced with your SkySafari account—they are for your personal reference only. The tool does not store or transmit any data; all event data extraction, reminder tracking, category filtering, and settings are processed and saved entirely within your browser.
