Universal Meta Description Preview

WHAT IT DOES

Universal Meta Description Preview automatically detects and displays the meta description of the current webpage in a compact, always-visible preview badge. The badge shows the page title, meta description, character count with SEO recommendations (120-160 characters is optimal), and the source of the description (meta, og, or twitter). A Google Search preview simulation shows how the page would appear in search results, helping you optimize your meta tags for better SEO. Missing or empty meta descriptions are highlighted with a warning, making it easy to spot pages that need SEO improvement.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on any website across the entire web. It functions on blogs, news sites, e-commerce pages, documentation, and any page with meta tags. The tool works across all domains and adapts to dynamically loaded content and single-page applications.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to any webpage. A compact preview badge appears in the bottom-left corner showing the meta description, title, and character count. Use the overlay panel to customize the experience: toggle the meta preview badge on or off, toggle the title preview on or off, toggle the character count display on or off, toggle the Google Search preview on or off, and toggle missing meta highlighting on or off. Click "Refresh Preview" to manually update the preview, or "Copy Description" to copy the meta description to your clipboard. The status area shows whether a meta description was found and its character count.

TECHNICAL SECTION — META DATA EXTRACTION AND PREVIEW GENERATION

The extension extracts meta data from multiple sources: the title tag, meta name="description", meta property="og:description", and meta name="twitter:description". It selects the best available description and displays it along with its source. Character count analysis provides SEO recommendations — descriptions under 120 characters are flagged as too short, over 160 characters as too long. The Google Search preview simulation mimics the search result appearance with a blue title link, green URL, and gray description text. The preview badge is created using DOM manipulation with inline CSS, positioned at the bottom-left corner with a backdrop blur effect. All settings are persisted locally using GM_setValue, and a MutationObserver re-scans the page for meta changes.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing the current meta status; expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more controls. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

This extension requires the free BotGentz companion extension to function, as it provides the underlying content script injection and cross-origin communication framework. No personal data, browsing history, or page content is stored, transmitted, or shared. Settings are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and are never sent to any external server. The extension does not access or store login credentials, financial data, or personally identifiable information. The tool reads meta tags visible on the page and does not access any private data. The character count recommendations are based on general SEO best practices and may vary depending on the specific search engine or content type. The tool is for informational and optimization purposes and should be used in conjunction with proper SEO analysis tools.
