WHAT IT DOES

Universal Page Translation Toggle detects the language of the current webpage and provides a simple overlay button to toggle between the original language and an auto-translated version. The tool uses Google Translate's free API to translate the entire page content, highlights translated text for easy identification, and remembers your translation preference per domain. This makes it easy to read content in your preferred language without using external translation services or browser extensions.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on any website across the entire web. It functions on news sites, blogs, documentation pages, social media, and any page with text content. The tool works across all domains and adapts to dynamically loaded content and single-page applications.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to any webpage in a language you want to translate. A "🌐 Translate" button appears in the bottom-right corner. Click it to translate the entire page to your target language (default English). Click the button again to restore the original language. Use the overlay panel to customize the experience: select your target language (English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean), toggle the translation button on or off, toggle translated text highlights on or off, and toggle per-domain preference remembering on or off. The tool automatically detects the page's original language and applies translation.

TECHNICAL SECTION — LANGUAGE DETECTION AND CONTENT TRANSLATION

The extension uses a multi-strategy language detection engine that checks HTML lang attributes, meta tags, and analyzes text content using common word frequency patterns for 10 languages. For translation, it uses the Google Translate API (translate.googleapis.com) which is free and requires no API key. The page content is extracted by cloning the DOM and removing non-content elements (script, style, iframe, svg, canvas). Large pages are split into chunks of up to 5000 characters to avoid API limits, with HTML tags preserved. The translation is applied by replacing the entire page body content, and original content is stored for toggling back. Translated text can be highlighted with a subtle green underline and background. Per-domain preferences are stored using GM_setValue, automatically restoring translation state on revisit.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing the current translation status; expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more controls. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

This extension requires the free BotGentz companion extension to function, as it provides the underlying content script injection and cross-origin communication framework. No personal data, browsing history, or page content is stored, transmitted, or shared. Translation requests are sent to Google Translate's public API solely to perform the translation; no other information is transmitted. Settings are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and are never sent to any external server. The extension does not access or store login credentials, financial data, or personally identifiable information. The Google Translate API is a free public service and may have rate limits or occasional downtime. Translation may not be perfect for all languages or content types. Large pages may take a few seconds to translate. The tool preserves HTML structure but may not maintain all formatting or interactive elements.
