Universal Text Complexity Heatmap

WHAT IT DOES

Universal Text Complexity Heatmap creates a visual overlay on any webpage that shows the complexity of text content at a glance. The script analyzes text blocks (paragraphs, sections, or sentences) and calculates a complexity score based on word length, sentence length, syllable count, and proportion of long words. Each block is then color-coded: green for easy text, yellow for moderate, orange for complex, and red for very complex. As you scroll the page, you can instantly see which sections are easy to read and which contain dense, complex language. Hover over any highlighted section to see its exact complexity score. A legend explains the color coding, and statistics show the distribution of complexity levels across the page. You can switch between paragraph-level, sentence-level, or word-level analysis, and adjust sensitivity to fine-tune the detection.

WHERE IT RUNS

This script runs on every website (matching all URLs), analyzing page content across the entire web. It works on articles, blog posts, documentation pages, product descriptions, and any page with visible text content. The script automatically adapts to each page and handles both static and dynamically loaded content.

HOW TO USE

After installing through the BotGentz extension, simply browse to any webpage. The script automatically analyzes the page and overlays the complexity heatmap. Use the configuration panel to customize your experience: choose the analysis scope (paragraph, sentence, or word), select a color scheme (Traffic Light, Thermal, or Monochrome), adjust sensitivity (0.3 to 2.0), toggle the heatmap overlay on or off, show or hide the legend, show or hide scores, and enable or disable auto-analysis. The panel displays real-time statistics including average complexity score and counts per complexity level. Use the "Analyze Page" button to manually reanalyze, or "Clear Heatmap" to remove the overlay.

MULTI-FACTOR COMPLEXITY SCORING WITH VISUAL OVERLAY ENGINE

This script implements a text complexity analysis engine using four factors: average word length, average syllables per word, proportion of long words (6+ characters), and average words per sentence. Each factor is normalized and weighted to produce a score from 0 to 1. The sensitivity setting scales the raw score before normalization, allowing users to adjust the detection threshold. The analysis scope parameter determines how text is segmented—paragraph-level analysis groups content by HTML block elements, sentence-level analysis splits by punctuation, and word-level analysis examines individual words. The overlay engine applies CSS classes to each text block with background colors, left borders, and optional score badges. The color scheme engine maps complexity levels to configurable color palettes.

THE PANEL

The configuration panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per-site using GM_setValue. It snaps to screen edges when dragged near them, collapses to a compact bubble when minimized, and supports Escape key for quick collapse. All settings—including heatmap visibility, analysis scope, color scheme, sensitivity, legend display, score display, and auto-analysis—are persisted across sessions.

It does not capture, store, or transmit any personal information. All analysis occurs locally in your browser. The complexity scoring is based on general readability metrics and may not be accurate for all types of content, especially technical or specialized text.
