WHAT IT DOES

Windy Web Storm Track Overlay automatically scans Windy storm tracking pages and extracts comprehensive storm data including storm name, type (Hurricane, Cyclone, Typhoon, Tropical Storm), current position, wind speed, pressure, movement direction and speed, forecast track points, category, estimated time to landfall, and intensity trends. The tool displays a floating overlay panel that summarizes all active storms in the current view with color-coded severity indicators—Extreme (red), Severe (orange), Moderate (yellow), and Minor (green). Each storm entry shows its name, type, category, wind speed, pressure, movement direction, position, landfall estimate when available, and trend (Strengthening, Weakening, or Steady). The storm's forecast path is highlighted with forecast point markers. A severity legend explains the color-coding. You can toggle storm track visibility on the map with a single click, and your preference is saved across sessions. This provides a complete, at-a-glance picture of all active storm systems.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension operates exclusively on windy.com domain pages that contain storm tracking content—specifically pages with "/storms", "/hurricane", or "/cyclone" in the URL path, or pages that display storm tracks and tropical weather information. It works alongside the free BotGentz companion extension, which provides the necessary DOM access and page interaction capabilities. The storm track overlay runs entirely within your local browser instance and does not communicate with any external servers or APIs. All storm data extraction, severity analysis, and preference storage occurs on your machine, ensuring your weather tracking activity and settings remain private. It supports all modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox when paired with the BotGentz bridge.

HOW TO USE

After installing both BotGentz and this storm track overlay, navigate to any Windy storm tracking page. Within 1-2 seconds, a panel appears in the bottom-right corner displaying a list of active storms, sorted by severity. The "Active Storms" section shows each storm with its name, type emoji, severity badge, and key details including category, wind speed, pressure, movement direction, position, landfall estimate when available, and intensity trend with trend arrows. Forecast points are shown as a preview. The "Legend" section explains the severity color-coding. The "Settings" section includes a toggle to show or hide storm tracks on the map—your preference is saved automatically. The panel provides a complete overview of all active storm systems in the current view.

STORM DATA EXTRACTION AND SEVERITY ANALYSIS

The storm track overlay uses a multi-strategy extraction system to locate and parse storm data from Windy pages. It first attempts to find structured storm elements using selectors based on the site's typical class naming patterns, including "storm-item," "storm-card," "cyclone-item," and "hurricane-item." When these selectors fail due to site updates, the tool falls back to scanning page content for storm-like text patterns, looking for elements that contain storm names with "Tropical," "Hurricane," "Cyclone," or "Typhoon" prefixes, or wind speed indicators. For each detected storm, the tool extracts the name through pattern matching for storm naming conventions, type through keyword detection for storm categories, wind speed through pattern matching for values with mph/kmh/knots, pressure through pattern matching for values with mb/hPa/inHg, movement direction through pattern matching for "moving" or "movement" labels, category through pattern matching for "category" or "cat." labels, forecast points through pattern matching for future time indicators with coordinate data, and landfall through pattern matching for "landfall" labels. Severity analysis uses a threshold-based system: Category 4+ or wind speeds above 130 mph map to Extreme, Category 3 or winds 100-130 mph to Severe, Category 1-2 or winds 70-100 mph to Moderate, and lower to Minor.

THE PANEL

The storm track overlay panel is a compact, functional overlay that integrates into the Windy storm tracking page. It can be dragged by clicking and holding the title bar, positioning the panel anywhere on the screen for optimal visibility while you monitor storm activity. The panel includes a built-in snap feature that automatically aligns to the nearest screen edge when released within 48 pixels, keeping your workspace organized. Click the collapse arrow in the top-right corner to minimize the panel to a small icon bubble showing a gear emoji, preserving screen space while keeping the tool accessible. The panel is not resizable in this version, maintaining a consistent compact size that works on all screen resolutions. Press the Escape key to instantly hide the panel; press Escape again to restore it. All position, collapse state, and storm track visibility preferences are saved locally using GM_setValue and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to function—the storm track overlay does not work standalone. Windy occasionally updates its page layouts and storm presentation formats, which may temporarily affect data extraction accuracy. The tool extracts storm data from the visible page content; if storm information is loaded dynamically after page load, you may need to wait a moment or refresh the page for the panel to populate. Severity indicators are based on extracted data and are provided as a reference—always consult official weather sources for authoritative storm information. Forecast points are extracted from the page and may not represent the full forecast track. The tool does not store or transmit any data; all storm data extraction, severity analysis, and settings are processed and saved entirely within your browser.
