About this app
WHAT IT DOES
Burda Style Web Pattern Difficulty Badge automatically scans Burda Style pattern product pages and extracts difficulty level indicators including skill level badges, sewing experience recommendations, and pattern complexity descriptions. The tool displays a prominent, color-coded difficulty badge (Beginner, Easy, Average, or Advanced) directly on the product page, making it instantly visible as you browse patterns. Each badge comes with a detailed description explaining what that difficulty level means in terms of required sewing skills and experience. The tool also includes a skill level comparison feature: you can set your own sewing skill level, and the extension will compare it to the pattern's difficulty, letting you know if the pattern matches your current abilities or if it might be too challenging. A comprehensive reference section explains the requirements for each difficulty level, helping you make informed purchasing decisions and choose patterns that align with your skill development goals.
WHERE IT RUNS
This extension operates exclusively on burdastyle.com domain pages that contain pattern product listings, specifically on individual pattern detail pages. It works alongside the free BotGentz companion extension, which provides the necessary DOM access and page interaction capabilities. The difficulty badge runs entirely within your local browser instance and does not communicate with any external servers or APIs. All difficulty extraction, skill level storage, and comparison logic occurs on your machine, ensuring your browsing activity and skill level preferences remain private. It supports all modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera) and Firefox when paired with the BotGentz bridge.
HOW TO USE
After installing both BotGentz and this difficulty badge, simply navigate to any Burda Style pattern product page. Within 1-2 seconds, a panel appears in the bottom-right corner displaying the extracted difficulty rating with a colored badge and explanatory description. The badge also appears directly on the product page near the pattern title for quick reference as you scroll. Use the "Your Skill Level" dropdown to set your current sewing experience level. The panel will automatically compare your skill level to the pattern's difficulty and display a recommendation: a green checkmark indicates the pattern matches or is below your level, while a yellow warning suggests the pattern may be above your current abilities. The "Settings" section lets you toggle the on-page badge display on or off. The "Level Descriptions" section provides detailed explanations of what each difficulty level entails, helping you understand the skill requirements before making a purchasing decision.
DIFFICULTY EXTRACTION MECHANISM
The difficulty badge uses a multi-layer extraction system to reliably detect difficulty information from Burda Style pattern pages. It first searches for explicit difficulty badge elements using a comprehensive set of CSS selectors based on Burda Style's typical page structure, including class names like "difficulty-badge," "skill-level," and "pattern-difficulty." These elements often contain clearly labeled difficulty text. When the primary selectors fail due to page updates, the tool falls back to text-based scanning, analyzing the entire page content for difficulty-related keywords in multiple languages (English, German, French). The keyword detection includes variations like "beginner," "anfänger," "debutant," "easy," "einfach," "facile," "average," "mittel," "moyen," "advanced," "fortgeschritten," and "avance." The tool also checks structured data attributes such as itemprop="difficulty" and data-skill-level for machine-readable difficulty information. Each detected difficulty level is assigned a confidence score (high, medium, or low) based on the extraction method used, giving users transparency about how the rating was determined.
THE PANEL
The difficulty badge panel is a compact, functional overlay that integrates into the Burda Style product page. It can be dragged by clicking and holding the title bar, positioning the panel anywhere on the screen for optimal visibility while you browse patterns. The panel includes a built-in snap feature that automatically aligns to the nearest screen edge when released within 48 pixels, keeping your workspace organized. Click the collapse arrow in the top-right corner to minimize the panel to a small icon bubble showing a gear emoji, preserving screen space while keeping the tool accessible. The panel is not resizable in this version, maintaining a consistent compact size that works on all screen resolutions. Press the Escape key to instantly hide the panel; press Escape again to restore it. All position, collapse state, skill level preference, and badge visibility settings are saved locally using GM_setValue and persist across browsing sessions.
PLEASE NOTE
This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to function—the difficulty badge does not work standalone. Burda Style occasionally updates its product page layouts, which may temporarily affect difficulty extraction accuracy. The tool extracts difficulty information from the visible page content; if a product page does not explicitly display difficulty information, the tool will provide an estimated rating based on text analysis with lower confidence. Difficulty ratings are subjective and may vary between pattern collections and designers—use the ratings as guidance, not as absolute guarantees of difficulty. The skill level comparison is based on your self-reported skill level and the extracted pattern difficulty; ultimately, you are the best judge of your own abilities. The tool does not store or transmit any data; all difficulty data, skill level preferences, and settings are saved entirely within your browser. This tool is designed for personal shopping assistance and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Burda Style or its parent company.
