About this app

WHAT IT DOES

AllTrails Hike Difficulty Comparison Overlay helps you choose your next hike by comparing difficulty ratings and trail metrics side-by-side. The script extracts trail names, difficulty ratings, length, elevation gain, route type, and user ratings from AllTrails search results and trail lists. A visible overlay shows difficulty comparisons between trails with color-coded indicators: green for easy, yellow for moderate, orange for hard, and red for expert. A comparison chart displays key metrics side-by-side, making it easy to spot differences at a glance. The easiest and hardest trails in the list are highlighted. You can track favorite trails and add personal difficulty ratings. A difficulty filter lets you narrow down trails by skill level. Comparison data can be exported for planning or sharing.

WHERE IT RUNS

This script runs on AllTrails, specifically on search results pages, trail lists, category views, and user trail collections. It works on both desktop and mobile views, automatically detecting trails and their associated data.

HOW TO USE

After installing through the BotGentz extension, navigate to any AllTrails search results or trail list page. The script automatically scans trails and displays a comparison overlay. A dashboard shows total trails, average length, average elevation, and the most common difficulty level. A length comparison chart visualizes trail lengths relative to each other. Each trail is displayed with its name, difficulty color-coding, length, elevation, route type, and rating. Use the configuration panel to customize your experience: toggle the overlay on or off, show or hide the comparison chart, enable or disable color-coded difficulty, show or hide metrics, enable or disable auto-detection, and choose your default sort (Name, Difficulty, Length, or Rating). The panel displays real-time statistics including total trails, average length, average elevation, and difficulty breakdown. Use the "Scan Trails" button to manually re-scan, or "Export Data" to copy a complete trail comparison report to your clipboard.

TRAIL DATA EXTRACTION WITH DIFFICULTY CLASSIFICATION AND COMPARISON VISUALIZATION

This script implements a trail data extraction engine using DOM traversal with platform-specific selectors for AllTrails's trail elements (.trail-card, .trail-item, .result-item). The engine extracts trail names, difficulty ratings, length, elevation gain, route type, and user ratings using multiple selector strategies with fallback patterns. The difficulty classification system uses keyword detection (easy, moderate, hard, expert) to assign color-coded categories. The comparison chart uses SVG-based bar visualization to show relative trail lengths. The statistics engine calculates total trails, average length, average elevation, and difficulty breakdowns. The export generator produces a formatted report with all trail data and statistics.

THE PANEL

The configuration panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per-site using GM_setValue. It snaps to screen edges when dragged near them, collapses to a compact bubble when minimized, and supports Escape key for quick collapse. All settings—including overlay visibility, comparison display, difficulty coloring, metrics display, auto-detection, and default sort—are persisted across sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This script requires the free BotGentz extension to run. The script runs on AllTrails and reads trail data from search results and trail lists. It does not capture, store, or transmit any personal information. All trail data is processed locally in your browser and never transmitted to external servers. The script reads only publicly visible trail information displayed on the page. Difficulty ratings are based on AllTrails' classification and may vary. This tool is provided for informational and entertainment purposes only.
