WHAT IT DOES

Freelance Invoice Time Tracker Overlay provides a simple start/stop timer overlay on any webpage for tracking time spent on freelance projects. The timer displays elapsed time in real-time with hours, minutes, and seconds, and calculates estimated earnings based on your hourly rate. Each time entry can be logged with a project name and optional notes, and all logs are saved locally. Export your time logs as CSV or JSON for invoicing or record-keeping. This tool helps freelancers accurately track billable hours across multiple projects without switching between apps.

This extension works on any website across the entire web. It functions on project work pages, client sites, research pages, and any page where you need to track time. The timer overlay stays visible as you browse, making it easy to track time on any task without losing focus.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to any webpage where you are working on a freelance project. A timer badge appears in the bottom-right corner showing the elapsed time. Click the badge to start or stop the timer. Before starting, enter a project name and optional notes in the overlay panel. The timer runs in the background while you work. When you stop the timer, the entry is logged with the project name, duration, and calculated earnings. Use the overlay panel to view your time logs, set your hourly rate, toggle the timer badge visibility, toggle earnings display, and export logs as CSV or JSON. Click "Reset Timer" to clear the current session without logging.

TECHNICAL SECTION — TIMER ENGINE AND PERSISTENCE

The extension uses a setInterval-based timer engine that tracks elapsed time with 100ms precision, updating the display in real-time. The timer state persists through page navigation using memory storage, and logs are saved using GM_setValue with auto-save functionality. Each log entry includes the date, project name, duration in seconds, formatted duration, notes, hourly rate, and calculated earnings. The timer handles pause/resume seamlessly, and the stop action automatically logs the current session. The export function generates CSV with proper quoting for spreadsheet compatibility, or JSON for programmatic use. All data is stored locally and never transmitted externally.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing the current timer status; expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more logs. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

No personal data, browsing history, or time tracking data is stored, transmitted, or shared. Time logs are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and are never sent to any external server.
