About this app

WHAT IT DOES

This tool monitors job opportunity listings on Idealist and provides a digest panel that shows you exactly what's new. It extracts job titles, organizations, locations, and posting dates from the page, then compares each listing against your previous visits. New jobs are highlighted with a "NEW" badge and counted in the panel header. You can save jobs to a favorites list with one click, and the panel provides direct "Apply" buttons that open the job listing in a new tab. The tool automatically tracks which jobs you've seen, so you never lose track of what's new.

WHERE IT RUNS

The script activates on any page within idealist.org, including job search results, organization listings, and opportunity pages. It automatically detects job listings using multiple selection strategies that work across different page layouts and view modes. The panel appears as a draggable overlay that stays accessible as you browse, scroll, or navigate between pages.

HOW TO USE

Visit any Idealist page with job listings — the panel will appear showing all detected opportunities. Each job displays its title (clickable to open), organization, location, and date. New jobs are marked with a "NEW" badge. Click the star icon on any job to save it to your favorites list for later review; click it again to remove it. Use the "Apply" button to open the job application page directly. The "Scan now" button manually refreshes the listing, while "Reset new" clears all new markers so previously seen jobs no longer show as new. The "Saved" button copies your saved job list to the clipboard for easy reference.

THE TECHNICAL MECHANISM

The script uses a cascading selector strategy to locate job listings on Idealist, trying multiple CSS selectors that target known class names like .listing-card, .job-listing, and .opportunity-card. If those fail, it falls back to a heuristic that scans for container elements containing both a heading and a link with "job" or "opportunity" in the href. Each job is assigned a unique identifier using either the numeric ID from the URL or a hash of the title, organization, and location. The script maintains a persistent object in GM_setValue mapping job IDs to timestamps, allowing it to determine which jobs are new by checking if the ID exists in the current session's seen set. The notification system triggers when new jobs are detected and desktop notifications are enabled, using GM_notification to alert you without requiring the page to be visible.

THE PANEL

The panel is fully draggable by its header and remembers its position on the page across sessions. It can be collapsed to a small bubble using the minimize button, then restored by clicking the bubble. The panel resizes automatically to fit its content and can be closed with the Escape key or by clicking the close button. The panel's position and state persist globally, so it returns to the same location on subsequent visits.

PLEASE NOTE

Requires the free BotGentz extension to run. Idealist may update its site structure, which could affect the script's ability to detect listings — updates will be released as needed. All job tracking data (seen status, saved jobs, settings) is stored locally in your browser and never transmitted anywhere. This tool reads only the visible content of the page and does not interact with Idealist's backend, modify your account, or send any data externally.
