WHAT IT DOES

Letterboxd Watchlist Randomizer helps you decide what to watch next by randomly selecting a movie from your Letterboxd watchlist. The script detects all movies in your watchlist and picks a random entry, displaying its title, poster, rating, and year. A visible button on the watchlist page lets you pick a random movie with one click—the selected movie is highlighted and displayed prominently. Filtering options let you narrow down the selection by decade, genre, or minimum rating. If you don't like the pick, simply re-roll for another random choice. Previously picked movies are tracked to avoid duplicates, ensuring you get fresh suggestions every time. The watchlist size and progress are shown. A "Pick of the Day" feature saves a daily random selection, giving you a movie to watch each day. A history of picked movies lets you look back at your past random selections.

WHERE IT RUNS

This script runs on Letterboxd, specifically on watchlist pages, list pages, and user film lists. It works on both desktop and mobile views, automatically detecting the movies displayed on the page.

HOW TO USE

After installing through the BotGentz extension, navigate to your Letterboxd watchlist or any film list page. A floating "Random Pick" button appears on the page—click it to pick a random movie. The selected movie is displayed with its title, year, rating, and poster. Use the configuration panel to customize your experience: filter by decade (2020s, 2010s, etc.), filter by genre, set a minimum rating, toggle duplicate avoidance on or off, toggle pick history saving, and enable or disable the "Pick of the Day" feature. The panel displays real-time statistics including watchlist size and total picks. Use the "Pick Random Movie" button to manually trigger a pick, or "Clear History" to reset your pick history.

MOVIE DETECTION WITH RANDOM SELECTION AND FILTERING ENGINE

This script implements a movie extraction engine using DOM traversal with platform-specific selectors for Letterboxd's film elements (.poster, .film-poster, .film-item, .watchlist-item). The engine extracts movie title, year, rating, poster URL, genre, and film URL using targeted selectors with fallback regex patterns. The filtering engine supports decade-based filtering (by parsing year), genre keyword matching, and minimum rating filtering. The random selection uses a cryptographically secure random number generator (Math.random) to ensure fair picks. The duplicate avoidance system tracks picked movies in local storage and filters them out of future selections. The "Pick of the Day" feature stores a daily selection that persists across sessions.

THE PANEL

The configuration panel is fully draggable and remembers its position per-site using GM_setValue. It snaps to screen edges when dragged near them, collapses to a compact bubble when minimized, and supports Escape key for quick collapse. All settings—including button visibility, filter preferences, duplicate avoidance, history saving, and pick of the day—are persisted across sessions.

This script requires the free BotGentz extension to run. The script runs on Letterboxd and reads movie data from watchlist pages. It does not capture, store, or transmit any personal information. All movie data and pick history are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and never transmitted to external servers. The script reads only publicly visible movie information displayed on the page. Due to Letterboxd's page structure, some metadata may not be available for all movies. For large watchlists, the script detects movies visible on the current page. This tool is provided for entertainment and informational purposes only.
