WHAT IT DOES

Windy.com Layer Quick-Switch Overlay reads the current map layer from the Windy.com interface and displays a floating overlay with quick-switch buttons for the most common layers. The overlay includes buttons for Wind, Temperature, Rain, Clouds, Pressure, and Waves. Each button is labeled with an icon and the layer name. The currently active layer is highlighted with a blue border and glow effect, making it easy to see which layer is displayed on the map. Clicking any button instantly switches the map to that layer by interacting with Windy's hidden layer controls. The overlay is draggable and remembers its position and opacity across sessions. You can customize which layers appear first using the favorites system, and the overlay updates automatically when you switch layers using Windy's native controls.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on all Windy.com pages at windy.com and its subdomains, specifically on the interactive map view where map layers can be selected. It runs on the main map page and any page displaying the Windy map interface. The extension operates entirely within your browser and does not access Windy's servers directly—it reads only what is visible on the page you are viewing. It works alongside the free BotGentz extension, which provides the necessary scripting environment.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension, then navigate to windy.com and open the interactive map. The extension automatically creates a floating overlay with layer quick-switch buttons. Click the extension's icon in your browser toolbar to open the settings panel. Use the "Show Overlay" / "Hide Overlay" button to toggle visibility. The "Refresh" button manually updates the overlay with the latest layer data. Adjust the overlay transparency using the opacity dropdown (60% to 100%). Use the favorite layer toggles to control which layers appear first—favorite layers are shown before others in the overlay. Drag the overlay by clicking and holding anywhere inside it. Close the overlay with the × button.

MULTI-SELECTOR LAYER DETECTION WITH EVENT DISPATCH

Unlike simple UI scrapers, this extension uses a comprehensive multi-selector approach to detect the current layer and interact with layer controls. It searches for active layer indicators using multiple selector patterns, including CSS classes, data attributes, and URL parameters. When switching layers, the extension attempts multiple activation methods: direct click on layer elements, data-attribute targeting, and text-based element location. For each attempt, it dispatches both native click events and React-compatible event bubbles to ensure the layer control responds correctly. The extension also handles cases where Windy's layer controls are nested or hidden, traversing parent elements to find clickable targets. This multi-method activation strategy ensures reliable layer switching across different versions of Windy's interface and various page states.

THE PANEL

The panel supports drag-to-move anywhere on the page. It remembers its position per site, so it stays where you placed it on windy.com. Click the panel header to collapse it down to just the minimized bubble, or click the expand handle to show the full panel. The panel can be resized by dragging the bottom-right corner. Press the Escape key to close the expanded panel and return to the minimized state. All panel settings, including position, size, collapsed state, opacity, and favorite layers, are saved per site and persist across browsing sessions.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz extension to be installed and active, as it provides the underlying DOM injection and script execution environment. Windy.com's website changes periodically, and layer control structures, class names, and page layouts may be updated. When that happens, the extension may stop detecting or switching layers until an update is released. The extension stores your overlay position, opacity, visibility, and favorite layers locally in your browser's storage using GM_setValue. No data is ever sent to any server, and no personal information is collected. The extension does not read or store your Windy.com login credentials, email, location, or any identifying information. It only reads the current layer state from the page and interacts with layer controls. You can clear all stored settings at any time by clearing your browser data for windy.com.
