WHAT IT DOES

Course Deadline Countdown Badge automatically detects assignment due dates on learning management systems, course pages, and educational websites, then displays a compact countdown badge next to each deadline showing the time remaining. The badge color changes based on urgency — green for comfortable time, yellow for moderate, orange for approaching, and red for urgent or expired. The tool also provides optional notifications when deadlines are within 24 hours, helping you stay on top of your coursework and never miss a submission deadline.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on any website that displays course assignments, due dates, or deadlines. It functions on learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, Schoology), course websites, assignment pages, and any page with date-based deadlines. The tool works across all domains and adapts to various date formats and page structures.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to your course or assignment page. The tool automatically scans the page for due dates and adds countdown badges next to each deadline. Use the overlay panel to customize the experience: adjust the urgency threshold in days (default 3 days) — this controls when the badge color changes from yellow to orange, toggle showing hours/minutes for deadlines under 24 hours, enable or disable low-time notifications, and add custom date selectors if the tool doesn't detect deadlines on a particular site. Click "Refresh Deadlines" to manually rescan the page after loading new content. The countdown badges update automatically every minute.

TECHNICAL SECTION — DATE DETECTION AND COUNTDOWN ENGINE

The extension uses a comprehensive date detection engine that scans the page for common deadline indicators using a curated list of selectors (due-date, deadline, assignment-deadline, etc.) and custom user-defined selectors. It also searches text nodes for date patterns using regex, handling multiple formats including MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, and month-name formats (e.g., "March 15, 2024"). Relative date strings ("3 days from now") are also parsed. Each detected date is validated and associated with its DOM element. A countdown badge is inserted next to each deadline, displaying the remaining time. The badge updates every minute via setInterval, recalculating the time remaining and updating the color based on configured urgency thresholds. Notifications are triggered when a deadline crosses the 24-hour threshold.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing the current deadline status; expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more controls. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

PLEASE NOTE

This extension requires the free BotGentz companion extension to function, as it provides the underlying content script injection and cross-origin communication framework. No personal data, browsing history, or deadline data is stored, transmitted, or shared. Settings are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and are never sent to any external server. The extension does not access or store login credentials, financial data, or personally identifiable information. The tool reads dates displayed on the page and does not access any LMS API or private data. Deadline detection accuracy depends on the page structure and date format; custom selectors can be added for sites not covered by the default detection. The tool is a helpful reminder and should not be solely relied upon for critical deadlines.
