WHAT IT DOES

Listing School District Overlay automatically detects the property address on any real estate or property listing page and looks up the corresponding school district information. It displays the school district name, grade ranges served, contact information, and website links directly in an overlay panel. The tool helps home buyers, renters, and real estate professionals quickly evaluate school district quality without leaving the listing page, making it easier to assess one of the most important factors in property decisions.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on any website that displays property addresses, including major real estate platforms like Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com, Trulia, and thousands of local MLS and classified listing sites. It automatically scans the page for address patterns and works on property detail pages, search result listings, and even PDF-like embedded address displays. No site-specific configuration is required — the address detection engine handles diverse page layouts and selector patterns.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to any property listing page. The overlay panel will appear with the property address pre-filled automatically. Click the "Look Up School District" button to query the OpenStreetMap database for district information. The tool will geocode the address, then search for school district boundaries and related administrative data. Results appear in the panel, showing the district name, grade levels served, and any available website or contact information. Use the "Open District Website" button to visit the district's official site, or "Copy District Info" to copy all details to your clipboard.

TECHNICAL SECTION — TWO-STAGE GEOCODING AND OVERPASS BOUNDARY QUERY

Unlike simpler tools that rely on third-party APIs with restrictive usage limits or paid tiers, this extension uses a two-stage open-source approach. First, it geocodes the property address using the Nominatim API from OpenStreetMap, which returns precise latitude/longitude coordinates and detailed address components including city, county, and state. Second, it queries the Overpass API — a read-only API that searches OpenStreetMap's vast geographic database — to find administrative boundary relations near those coordinates. The Overpass query specifically targets administrative boundaries at levels 6 through 9, which typically correspond to school districts in most regions. The query filters for boundary relations with names and optionally extracts grade range tags if present in the OpenStreetMap data. If no district boundary is found, the extension falls back to a reverse geocoding approach that identifies the county and state, then constructs a sensible county-level district name. All results are cached locally for 24 hours to reduce redundant API calls and improve performance when revisiting properties.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing only the district name (if found); expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more or fewer details. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

This extension requires the free BotGentz companion extension to function, as it provides the underlying content script injection and cross-origin communication framework. No personal data, browsing history, property data, or school district information is stored, transmitted, or shared. All address detection, geocoding, and district lookups occur through public OpenStreetMap and Overpass APIs; no information is sent to any third-party analytics or tracking services. The extension does not access or store login credentials, financial data, or personally identifiable information. The OpenStreetMap APIs are free and publicly accessible but rate-limited; district lookups may be delayed during peak usage. District boundaries in OpenStreetMap are community-contributed and may not be complete or up-to-date for all regions; results should be verified with local authorities.
