WHAT IT DOES

Vacation Rental Cleaning Fee Highlighter automatically detects cleaning fees on vacation rental websites — including Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, and others — and extracts the fee amount. It calculates the cleaning fee as a percentage of the total stay cost and displays a compact highlighter badge showing the fee amount and percentage. The badge is color-coded: green for low fees (under half the threshold), yellow for moderate fees, and red for high fees (above the threshold). This helps you quickly spot properties with excessive cleaning fees and compare total costs more effectively.

WHERE IT RUNS

This extension works on any website that displays vacation rental price breakdowns. It functions on Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, HomeAway, and other booking sites that show cleaning fees in their price details. The tool works across all domains and adapts to various price display formats and currencies.

HOW TO USE

Install the extension and navigate to any vacation rental listing or checkout page with price details. A compact cleaning fee badge appears showing the fee amount, percentage of total, and a color-coded warning level. Use the overlay panel to customize the experience: toggle the cleaning fee badge on or off, adjust the high fee threshold percentage (default 15%), choose between Default (subtle) or Vibrant (bold) color schemes, select the badge position (Top Right, Top Left, Bottom Right, Bottom Left, or Inline), and add custom CSS selectors for sites not covered by the default detection. Click "Refresh Fee" to manually update the badge after loading new data.

TECHNICAL SECTION — CLEANING FEE DETECTION AND PERCENTAGE CALCULATION

The extension uses a multi-strategy detection engine to find cleaning fees and total prices on vacation rental sites. It queries known cleaning fee selectors including .cleaning-fee, .cleaningfee, .fee-cleaning, and [data-testid="cleaning-fee"], and total price selectors including .total-price, .final-price, and .grand-total. Custom selectors can be added and are automatically categorized based on keywords. Currency parsing extracts numeric values and currency symbols from text. The fee percentage is calculated as: (cleaning fee / total price) * 100. The badge is color-coded based on the user's threshold: below 50% of threshold is green, between 50% and threshold is yellow, and above threshold is red. The badge is created using DOM manipulation with inline CSS and can be positioned either fixed in corners or inline with the content.

THE PANEL — DRAG / PER-SITE POSITION / SNAP / COLLAPSE / RESIZE / ESCAPE

The overlay panel is fully interactive and designed for seamless multitasking. Drag it anywhere on the screen using the handle at the top of the panel; the position is saved per site so it stays where you left it across sessions. The panel includes a snap-to-edge feature that gently anchors the overlay to the nearest screen edge when released. Click the collapse button to minimize the panel to a compact pill showing the current fee status; expand it again with a single click. Resize the panel vertically by dragging the bottom-right corner to view more controls. Press the Escape key at any time to instantly close the overlay; it reappears on the next page navigation or refresh.

This extension requires the free BotGentz companion extension to function, as it provides the underlying content script injection and cross-origin communication framework. No personal data, browsing history, or booking data is stored, transmitted, or shared. Settings are stored locally in your browser using GM_setValue and are never sent to any external server. The extension does not access or store login credentials, financial data, or personally identifiable information. The tool reads price data visible on the page and does not access any site API or private data. Price detection accuracy depends on the page structure; custom selectors can be added for sites not covered by the default detection. The fee percentage is an estimate based on detected data and may not capture all fees; always verify the final price before booking.
